Mitzvah Vendor Interview

Pop Color Vendor: Susan Hornyak Photography

Susan Hornyak, owner of Susan Hornyak Photography, is one of my favorite ladies to lunch with, plus she is such a talented photographer. My clients love her laid back, calming vibe, not to mention her stunning photos! She is a lady of few words because her photographs speak for themselves. I’ll leave it to her to tell you a little bit more about herself.

Susan Hornyak Photography Logo
How did you get started in your business?

I was always an avid photographer who carried a camera everywhere.  In 1992 a friend got married and asked me to do the photography.  I loved it and told everyone I knew about it.  I started getting word of mouth referrals.  Most of my first weddings were casual but as I got requests for more complex jobs I worked with a few of the big photographers in town to learn lighting and everything I could about the business.  I went full-time in 1996 and started incorporating mitzvahs, portrait and corporate work into my business.

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

I love interacting with people.  Some of my clients and fellow vendors have become some of my closest friends.

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

My personality (I hope).  Also, I try to be as easy to work with and flexible as possible.

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

I love both the quiet time to take portraits on the day other than the party.  I also love a raging party when all the day glow favors come out.

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

They should ask to see samples of other jobs to see if they like your photography style.  You should also sit down together and see if your personalities mesh.  Not every vendor is a fit for every client.

Pop Color Vendor: Michael Temchine Photography

I love working with Michael Temchine of Michael Temchine Photography and Mitzvahs by Michael. His work is stunning and he has such a way of capturing the special moments of your family’s big day. I know you’ll love him too, so read on for a little bit more about how he became a photographer and why he loves what he does.

How did you get started in your business?

For as long as I could remember every I asked for a camera from my parents for Chanukah, or my birthday. My interest in photography grew exponentially in high school leading to my attending the Rochester Institute of Technology for a degree in photojournalism. At the final class my fellow future photojournalists and I talked about what we were all going to do. I said, “I don’t know what exactly I am going to do, but I do know I am never going to freelance or shoot weddings.”

Boy was I wrong. I just did not know it yet.

Upon graduation, I began my photojournalism career covering politics then freelanced for many publications specializing in features (culture, life, community, and portraiture). Along with many photojournalists, my desire was to use photography to change the world; to have an impact on how the public sees and interacts with each other.

So how did I become that which I swore I would never become, a wedding and mitzvah photographer? All it required was a change of perspective on what “the world” meant.

The focus of my photography is now on the individual world of each family I work with. Photographing their life’s most important moments could not be more consequential; with the impact lasting generations. I love being able to tell your stories. I love being able to show you, you with real moments – large and small.

Evan's bar mitzvah at Oheb Shalom in Baltimore, MD by Michael Temchine Photography

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

A photojournalist friend of mine once told me when I was starting out that “… all stories are about people.” The people I meet and photograph will always be my favorite part. I love the interactions, relationships, and dynamics of people coming together.

I love finding those little moments that nobody else sees and capturing it for eternity. I love that a still image never gets older. Your bar, or bat, mitzvah kid will always be 13 in that photo even when you display it at their wedding, or to their grandchildren. You never get older in a photo and these are precious times in their lives.

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

What makes me, me is that I know that it is never about me. This is your mitzvah, not mine. These are your kids and friends, not mine. My job is to tell your story, not mine. I am a keen observer and a discreet photographer that does not interject, unnecessarily, myself into the event.

Whether it is portraiture or the party I am always looking for moments of personality to peek through. When you look through photos that I have taken they should ring true and not staged.

I see the moments that tell your story. That is my strength.

Sarah's bat mitzvah at Har Shalom in Potomac, MD. by Michael Temchine Photography

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

I don’t have a favorite moment, per se, what I have is a favorite overall feeling from the bar and bat mitzvah kid. What I love is to see the kid, the honoree, the star of the day, exuberant with joy at their party. I love seeing that the party they are attending is right for them. Unfortunately, I have been to parties that were not designed for the kid, where it is clear that they would rather be anywhere but there. Sometimes the party seems to be for everybody else, or the parents, and what the kid wants is lost.  That is why when I photograph parties where the kid has been involved, and listened to, are always fantastic.

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

  1. What is your approach to photography? Is it Photojournalistic/Documentary vs Traditional?
  2. Are you the photographer that will be there for the portraits and party?
  3. Do you have business/liability insurance?
  4. How do you handle equipment failure? (It happens and if the photographer does not have backups for their equipment then you are potentially without a photographer)
  5. What happens if we book you and you can’t make it? What are the reasons this might happen?
  6. How many years have you been a professional photographer? Do you make your living full-time as a photographer or is this a side gig/hobby?
  7. BONUS: What questions should parents NOT ask someone in your field?
Have you photographed at X venue before?

If you are only looking at professionals especially trained photojournalists, then the venue does not matter. Having been someplace before does not mean the photographer will have any special inside knowledge over another photographer. I have photographed bnai mitzvah and multiple weddings for the same families, sometimes at the same venues, and each time the photos were completely different. In these cases, the venues may be the same, and many of the people are the same. What is different is that the honoree is different, the time is different, so the energy and event is necessarily different. Same people, same place, different feel.

Pop Color Vendor: Event Video

I’ve really enjoyed working with Adam Nudelman of Event Video. He’s a true pro who will make sure you have a top notch experience plus give you amazing video coverage of your simcha. He also is going through the Mitzvah process right now with his own daughter (it’s this September!), so he gets it!

Here’s Adam to tell you more:

Pop Color Events interviews Adam Nudelman of Event Video about Mitzvah videography, questions to ask about video and more. | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

How did you get started with Event Video?

I was involved in video production at different television stations, and I always wanted to run my own business.  After a while, I was really looking for a more creative and positive outlet for my skills, after working on negative news stories and dealing with the politics of broadcast.  I saw Mitzvahs as a way to create a positive production for families and as a way to establish myself as an independent business away from the corporate structure of many stations.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part is delivering the final product and having the family absolutely love it!

What is your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

I do my best to lighten the mood for families during a very stressful time.

What is your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

I always get my favorite moments of the video during the Hora.

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

Are you going to shoot my event personally? There’s nothing worse than building a rapport with a videographer only to find out that they’ll be sending someone else to video your event.

Pop Color Vendor: Goodshuffle

I had the pleasure of meeting Karen Gordon, VP, Growth of Goodshuffle and knew I had to introduce her and her company to you. They are making the event rental industry easier and more accessible for customers, starting in the DC market. They connect you with rental companies for everything you can imagine from moon bounces to vintage furniture to table linens. Here’s Karen to tell you more:

Event Rentals for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah with Goodshuffle | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA
How did you get started with Goodshuffle?

I met Goodshuffle co-founders, Andrew Garcia and Erik Dreyer, last October. They told me about their vision to completely modernize the event rentals industry and I was blown away. Having worked in both the tech and the events worlds, I loved the idea of fusing the two. I also knew how important but complicated event rentals were, and simplifying them seemed simply brilliant.

Event Rentals for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah with Goodshuffle | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VAWhat’s your favorite part of what you do?

I love knowing that we’re reducing headaches surrounding very important events. We make it so much easier to come up with ideas, compare prices, and make payments online. By eliminating the typical back and forth with quote after quote, we make it a seamless process for both the renter and the rental company.

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

We’re a small team, but with a very broad mix of skills. We have tech, creative, events, and business expertise. Our common tie is that we’re all problem solvers. Even when someone calls us about something we don’t normally do, we usually try to help them find a solution.

Event Rentals for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah with Goodshuffle | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VAWhat’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

I love seeing both kids who are proud of themselves and their proud parents. At a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, you have a kid who completed something they’ve studied hard for, upheld a family tradition, and is becoming an adult in their religion. On the lighter side, they’re also throwing their first big event for all their loved ones! Between them and their family members, you see a lot of proud faces on that day.

Event Rentals for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah with Goodshuffle | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VAWhat questions should parents ask someone in your field?

We try to take away a lot of guess work in rentals. We have a tent calculator to know what size you need and a tablecloth calculator that shows exactly how your linens will look on any table. A lot of times people go with their gut, but I always think it’s safest to use the tools we provide and feel comfortable asking and double-checking before you end up with the wrong size or wrong item all together!

Pop Color Vendor: Airbrush Unlimited Group

I’ve gotten to know Myrta Byrum of Airbrush Unlimited Group and she is just the sweetest. Her company employs so many talented artists (including her adult kids!) who are able to airbrush on any item you can imagine from skin to shirts to pillows. Here’s Myrta to tell you more.

Have Airbrush Unlimited Group provide unique airbrushed favors for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

How did you get started with Airbrush Unlimited Group?

In 1999, I helped a friend with her airbrush business to fulfill a contract with the Raven’s Football organization. I LOVED doing the airbrushing and found I was creative with it. I knew this was something I wanted do more with, that’s how Airbrush Unlimited Group got started. I’m grateful for the introduction into this business early on.

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

Of course, I love how happy it makes folks, whether it be to the tattoo designs or the beautiful results of the blending airbrush colors on custom items. They always seem so very happy and that makes me happy. Being in Entertainment is almost always a happy experience, so it’s a great way to make a living.

Have Airbrush Unlimited Group provide unique airbrushed favors for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your pop color– that something special that makes you, you?

I hear clients say that I’m easy to work with… and I try to be. Parents/planners have a lot to deal with as they plan these special Mitzvahs and I don’t add to their stress. Being reliable and responsive to inquiries or requests makes it easy too.

Have Airbrush Unlimited Group provide unique airbrushed favors for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

I like to hear what the parents say about their kids… what they appreciate about them as they’ve grown thus far. I try NOT to take requests during this time and encourage guests to go listen and participate. It’s the reason for the event and it merits everyone’s attention. We have usually taken enough orders by then that it does not slow down the number we can accomplish and the purpose of our being there. Since our systems are whisper quiet, we can usually keep working without disrupting.

Of course, I also like to hear the hosts feedback on the quality of our work as we are doing it, but I understand they are busy and we are not the important factor, but I hope that what we contribute to the event, makes for a happy time at this important event. Also, the end of the night, we feel satisfied that we’ve been able to meet or exceed the expectations for our services, that is a good feeling.

Have Airbrush Unlimited Group provide unique airbrushed favors for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

Get references (if they didn’t already come referred). This is our specialty, so we are a great resource to inquire about ideas for airbrushed favors; some of the unique things we can do besides t’s; and what our space requirements are; are all good questions. Also, ask if there are any others services we provide. Often companies that have been around awhile do expand based on client demand and combining services with one company usually results in some cost savings.

Pop Color Vendor: Marvelous Montages

Montages are a special part of many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, but you may not know that there are companies that are devoted solely to designing those awesome Montages. Marvelous Montages creates unique, one of a kind montages that you really do have to see to believe. Marlene, Graphic Designer of Marvelous Montages does amazing things that I’ve never seen in another montage. She actually animates your still photographs to bring them to life, as well as helps you select the perfect songs to compliment your images. One of the great things about what she does is that everything can be completed online or in the mail so wherever you are in the country, or even overseas, you too can have your very own Marvelous Montage! Here’s Marlene to tell you a bit more:

Marvelous Montages | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

Why did you start Marvelous Montages?

Growing up in my family’s photography business, I have been around and assisted with Mitzvahs and special occasions since I little! This naturally grew into my taking pictures and designing artwork for foto favors and also to designing albums of the celebrations. About 10 years ago, I began designing montages as well. I have always loved being creative and artistic and have studied graphic design, so all these areas have given me an outlet to use that creativity.

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

I love bringing people’s pictures to life! A photo montage opens up a world of possibilities to experience your pictures in ways that you do not get by looking at them in a photo album. In a montage, people can be moving in a picture against the background, fireworks can come alive in your July 4th photo, the clouds in the sky can be moving in that fantastic vacation photo you have… and so much more! It’s wonderful to creatively tell the stories of your photos and present to you an imaginative, well-balanced, exciting video keepsake for you to treasure.

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

I definitely have an enthusiasm for designing and I love bringing that to your photo montage! I really invest in your montage and respect your photos – seeing how to best bring the stories in your pictures to the screen so the creativity looks natural, fun, unexpected at times, and shines with a sprinkle of “razzle dazzle” throughout! In a nice email I received from a montage family, they said that I “put (my) heart and soul into (my) work”. It’s nice to know that families see the care given to their pictures and are very appreciative of their Marvelous Montage.

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

In addition to the playing of the montage, I think the speech by the parents is always a wonderful part of a Mitzvah. Mom and Dad get to express how proud they are of their child and it is always a moving part of the celebration.

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

Some questions parents can ask: Are your montages usually all the same layout/style or is each montage designed uniquely based on the pictures you receive? What does the price include and are there items that are additional – adding captions, fixing red-eye or minor dust/scratches, etc. What samples do you have that are representative of the montage price point I would like to have?

Need a montage that is unlike anything your guests have ever seen? Visit Marvelous Montages, follow on Facebook to see her most recent work or visit her Pinterest page for montage inspiration.

Pop Color Vendor: Electric Entertainment LLC

I’m excited to introduce Brian Wasser, CEO of Electric Entertainment LLC. Brian is a true nice Jewish boy who, along with his awesome team, will take amazing care of you and ensure your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah is world class. Not only can they provide your MC and DJ, but you can also use Electric Entertainment for lighting, lounge furniture, draping and novelties. Working with Electric Entertainment is an easy way to check many items off of your planning to do list. Here’s Brian to share a bit about who he is and what he does:

Electric Entertainment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

How did you get started with Electric Entertainment?

Believe it or not, I started Electric Entertainment with my Bar Mitzvah money.  Like most Jewish kids, I went to sleepaway camp during the summer.  We had these terrible camp dances where the counselors would play music, the boys would sit on one side of the room and the girls on the other.  No one did anything.  I always loved to dance and perform, so I happened to have The Macarena on cassette tape with me at camp.  I gave it to the counselors and told them to play it and I would teach everyone how to do it (it was hot and new at the time!  Don’t ask…).  Anyway, I grabbed the mic and the rest was history.  After camp ended, campers would ask me if I would DJ their party back home.  When I got home, I took my Bar Mitzvah money, bought some basic equipment, and Electric Entertainment was born!

Electric Entertainment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

By far my favorite part is being able to give families a memory they will have forever.  Watching smiles on faces and getting people outside of their comfort zone to have an amazing time is such an awesome feeling.  I will never forget a mom hugging me after a party, saying she never thought her son would be up on stage dancing with me, or a Bat Mitzvah girl asking to pose for a selfie while saying it was the best day of her life.  What’s better than that?

Electric Entertainment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

I think what truly makes me special is that everything I do is innate.  I have never worked for another company nor been trained by anyone.  This is all me, au natural.  I always just did things the way I thought they should be done.  From the MC’s and dancers to the lighting and lounge furniture, I’ve always just had a knack and an eye for what works and what doesn’t, how to make people comfortable, how to set certain moods, and most importantly, how to connect to people on a level way beyond just “packing a dance floor.”  My clients tell me that I “become a member of the family” and that’s what I instill in my staff.  I can’t break dance.  I can’t spin on my head.  I’m 5’7″.  None of that matters when you just KNOW how to make people FEEL GOOD, and that’s what I think truly separates Electric Entertainment from the rest.

Electric Entertainment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

My favorite moment at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah happened recently.  I lost my father to liver disease 3 months ago and had a Bar Mitzvah just 2 days after his passing.  My client, of course, told me that I needed to be with my family and grieve my loss.  I told them that the show must go on and I would be at their son’s special day.  Entertaining is my passion, it’s what makes me feel good.  None of those guests care what I am going through.  When I walk through that door, I want to give everyone there the time of their lives.  What made this even more special was that this party was for a family that was also celebrating a different milestone; mom was finally cancer-free!  During the party, I knew I was in a zone honoring my dad.  The photographer came up to see afterward saying it was probably the best show he’d ever seen me at (He’s seen us dozens of times).  But the best moment was after the party ended.  The now cancer-free mom came up to me at the end, gave me a huge hug, and just started crying.  She told me she was so proud of me, but I told her this wasn’t about me.  She was crying because, after all she went through, her family truly had the night of their lives and they felt forever grateful.  I will never forget that hug of emotion or the tears of joy.

Electric Entertainment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

I advise my clients to decide what kind of party they want!  High-energy and action-packed?  More low key and reserved?  More games focused or dancing focused?  Nighttime/NY Style or less flashy?  All of those answers will help narrow the entertainment scope.

Clients should always ask about Bar and Bat Mitzvah experience.  These parties are a completely different animal than weddings, corporate events, etc.  Maintaining energy and entertainment for 13-year-olds and 50-year-olds at the same time requires unique talent and training.  Ask about what kind of training their staff receives.  Some companies just hire former high school cheerleaders and throw them to the fire.  My company, however, hires only polished and professional dancers.  We also have monthly training sessions where we practice what we do, learn from each other, and go over tools and tricks to maximize the guest experience.  It makes a huge difference, but not every party “needs” that level of talent quality, etc.  They should also ask about meeting their MC before even signing a contract. This could help ensure there’s a connection between the MC and guest of honor, as well as get to know each other and get a feel for his or her personality and style.

When it comes to entertainment and decor, there are various price points for different reasons.  I often use the hotel analogy.  You have the Four Seasons and you have the Hampton Inn.  Both provide a bed and a room while on vacation, but the experiences are completely different, as are the price points.  You have to determine what’s right for you.  I am biased but firmly believe that entertainment can make or break your guest experience and the overall success of your child’s special day.  There are no do-overs.  So long as you do your research and believe your entertainment company aligns with your vision and style for the party, you will have made a good choice.

Need an awesome MC/DJ or help with decor? Visit Electric Entertainment’s website or Facebook to get in contact. Or follow Brian on Twitter or Instagram to see what he’s up to (and some photos of his adorable son!).

Pop Color Vendor: It’s MY Party Consignment

I’m thrilled to introduce you to another one of my favorite vendors, Karyn Cramer Hollman, Owner of It’s MY Party Consignment. Karyn’s by appointment only shop allows you and your daughter to have a truly personalized dress shopping experience and find a bargain on a dress that your daughter will wear only once. Or, Karyn will sell your daughter’s once worn Bat Mitzvah dress giving you money back in your pocket. I love that her catchphrase is: “Together, let’s make your daughter feel like the star she is on her Bat Mitzvah!” Here is Karyn to tell you more about It’s MY Party Consignment:

It's MY Party Consignment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

How did you get started with It’s MY Party Consignment?

It’s MY Party Consignment specializes in dressing the Bat Mitzvah girl for her party and service.  From current to classic we stock an array of affordable and age appropriate attire.  We work to nurture confidence and self-expression through a private, sensitive one on one shopping experience.  While many of the dresses are new, most come from you, recent Bat mitzvah girls.   We consign that (generally pricey) dress, worn once, ever so briefly, the consignee makes some money and a new girl benefits from the cycle!

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

I started It’s MY Party Consignment after years of working with teen and pre-teen girls at the boutique My Best Friends Closet in Rockville. I have seen the joy and stress in their effort to find comfort, style and self-acceptance.  I have also listened with empathy to tales of challenging and costly special occasion dress shopping.  These are young, sensitive teenage girls and not infrequently worried parents watching their daughter grow up in the blink of an eye! I get it!

What’s your pop color–that something special that makes you, you?

Perspective!!!!  Being the mother of sons, I love interacting with girls and their families. In my past life, I was a social worker working with adolescents so I also enjoy being back with this age group and offering support even though it may be a brief encounter.  This perspective has brought joy to my work. From excited, pouty, confident or uncertain these girls light up my day.

It's MY Party Consignment | Pop Color Events | Adding a Pop of Color to Bar & Bat Mitzvahs in DC, MD & VA

What’s your favorite moment of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

There is no one moment but fortunately many!  I love seeing the generations together…doing the aliyahs, blessings and most importantly, on the dance floor!

What questions should parents ask someone in your field?

No one wants shopping to turn into a battle so I recommend being clear with your parameters prior to shopping. Length, cut, price and so on. Keep in mind that straps can always be added to a dress!  It is especially important that your daughter feels comfortable and happy in her dress. We may think a different style or color looks better on her BUT if she is not comfortable, she will not feel at ease.  Joy and confidence IS beautiful!

Want to make money selling your once worn dress OR find a bargain on a dress your daughter will wear once? Contact Karyn at It’s MY Party Consignment!
