Below is a curated list of candle lighting essentials I recommend to clients. You don’t need every item here. Think of this as a starting point and build from there based on your space, style, and how you want the moment to feel.

What You Actually Need for Candle Lighting
If you want to keep things simple, this is what most families truly need:
- 13 candles (or however many your ceremony includes)
- 13 holders or glass cylinders
- 1 shamash candle (the lighting candle)
- 2 long-reach lighters (always bring a backup)
Keeping it streamlined helps everything feel more intentional and photograph better.
Taper Candles (Classic Candle Lighting Choice)
White taper candles are the most traditional option. Drip-resistant candles make a big difference here. They help avoid wax on hands, clothing, and linens.

Light-up marquee letters work well if you want something that stands out once the lights go down.
If you prefer something more subtle, you can use self-standing letters and paint them to match your color palette.
